Remsenburg

Remsenburg

The westernmost hamlet considered part of the Hamptons, located 75 miles east of New York City, Remsenburg was named in 1895 for Charles Remsen, a notable resident who donated a new Presbyterian Church to the community. There is no commercial property in this residential hamlet, which borders on Moriches Bay to the south. Lovely historic homes line Main Street in this close-knit community. Among several famous residents are P.G. Wodehouse, author of the Jeeves and Wooster stories, who is buried in the churchyard; Frank Loesser, prolific songwriter for Broadway and Hollywood; and Stan Lee of Marvel Comics. The screenplay for Psycho was written here.

The Remsenburg Association is a nonprofit organization active in supporting the community and dedicated to preserving the bucolic and historic character of the hamlet. The Remsenburg Academy, once a private boys' school, is now a historic landmark and the site of a library, art shows, and a variety of community events. The local Garden Club holds a popular holiday wreath sale each year. The Westhampton Yacht Squadron is based here and hosts weekend regattas on Moriches Bay in summer and fall.

“Biking from Remsenburg through Westhampton Beach and into Quogue is such a pleasure! Along the way I’ll enjoy water views, passing by creeks and the bay, seeing countless water birds and taking in the vistas over the little bridges.” Heather Bittner Bester
